TOPIC: Does my market name sound like too much of a drug reference?

Does my market name sound like too much of a drug reference? 1 year, 1 month ago #2071

I have my doubts if 'Sweet Leaf Kratom' is a good idea considering the term sweet leaf is popularly associated with marijuana. I personally have never had much to do with marijuana culture so to my own ears it is benign and just has a good ring. But will it come off as trying to associate Kratom with marijuana? This is not my intention. Kratom is Nothing like marijuana and I would prefer not to even hint in that direction.
What do you think?

I'm leaning heavily toward changing it, perhaps to Sweet Tree Kratom...

I suppose if you're having second thoughts about the choice of name, the earlier you change it the better (ie, before you put time and effort into building a brand, only to abandon it).

The term "sweet leaf" doesn't scream "drugs" to me, but then again I'd never heard the term before.

Sweet Leaf is originally an old Black Sabbath song as an ode to marijuana and from that to some degree the term sweet leaf has become a synonym for pot.
Sweet Leaf however has also become a popular branding name for Stevia.

It just has a better ring to it than does Sweet Tree. Nobody eats a tree, why would a tree be sweet?

My main concern is that I do not want to do anything that contributes to authorities view that Kratom should be scheduled, banned etc.

I'm a strong advocate for watchdogging sellers and educating users to self regulate so we don't encourage authorities to have to regulate us.

My core philosophy is if we regulate ourselves and demonstrate impeccable responsibility regarding the sale and use of Kratom authorities will leave us be and hopefully respect us as a good contributing member of the economy.

At the same time I am all for innovation and creativity for marketing and use of Kratom.
We need to find the optimum balance.

Know the Sabbath song well lol. They also did snowblind about cocaine. I think the names ok. Though the taste of kratom aint sweet at all. Yuk!

Actually I rather like the taste of Kratom.
Curious thing though, I have found the taste can vary considerably between the varieties.
It seems the Red & White Sumatra's have some of the most bitter and strong flavor.
Green Malay surprisingly has almost no flavor. The first time I tried it I thought this stuff isn't going to be potent, but it is very potent, with no flavor even.
The Riau's also seem to be relatively mild.

Actually I have to qualify my reviews, are specifically for powder cold mixed with water.
I just mix the powder with a cup of cold water and mechanically stir it till all particles are evenly dispersed in the water. Almost all Kratom is nearly flavorless that way. The #1 best way to mix I say is with one of those magic bullet blenders using the small cup.

The Worst tasting Kratom has been this White Borneo I got from KratomIndo. It is fiercely astringent, bitter and sour, like Mimosa Hostilis with lemon juice. And that's even with the cold wash method.

When I have brewed Kratom as hot tea, now That is nasty. Makes the tongue numb even. Foul sharp flavor.

Cold mixed with sweetened ice tea and the Kratom actually makes the tea taste better. A unique flavor enhancement only Kratom can provide.

I'm not a fan of the taste of kratom either, but I'd agree that the Riaus are amongst the least objectionable - the sweetest, even...

Hi SweetLeaf;
Having lived in for many years and come out of the drug scene I immediately related the name to exactly that - the drug scene. If I were you - and for the sake of keeping a good impression of Kratom NOT being the "legal high" product - I would change the name!! Just my opinion - - for what its worth!! Sweet tree has a nice ring to it!

Was not aware of the song, just thought it was a very humorous name, since kratom is all, but sweet. Would keep the name, don't see anything wrong with it.

One must remember, though, that this is a very culturally-oriented Q&A. Considering the issues faced here in the US, using a name known to many here to be Marijuana-oriented may not be wise. Again, this is culturally oriented. I'm sure those across the pond have slang terms that we Yanks are not familiar with, and vice versa.

My 2 cents.

(FYI - I know Ozzie is from the UK. )

As long as you dont have a name like Vicozen, Perkoset, OPM etc... You will be fine. It is how you conduct business. If you want to get in the Kratom business, you need to expect ease at first, and then a brick wall from the FDA. Make sure you study as much as possible as to what they require to try and stay under the radar. You will soon understand, this is a fight to place our herb in a legal, consumable classification, not on little things like Sweet Leaf or Sweet Tree...

ADVISE: Do not make claims at all. Use only history to describe. Include the FDA statement everywhere you can, website, labels, etc. You cannot sell for human consumption YET, without being put under a magnifying glass. 18 and over. Most importantly, not as a high!

Good luck!

While KT has a good point, I tend to agree with Ben here. In other words, if you yourself have second thoughts/doubts about the name, then save yourself some potential sleep-deprivation, and change it to something you are REALLY comfortable with.
You can call me Ray.
